Nick Van Dam

Capt. Nick Van Dam, 37, a dedicated volunteer firefighter in Murdo, SD, loving husband, and devoted father, tragically passed away in an accident while doing what he loved most, helping others. Nick was responding to a grass fire as he had many times before when the tender truck he was driving left the roadway, rolled and ejected him.

Nick was dedicated to his community, generously offering his expertise to friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. He became a certified firefighter with the Murdo Volunteer Fire Department serving for eight years, the last six years as captain.

Nick lived a life of service; not just to his community, but to his family. He was a devoted father, husband, son, brother, and cherished friend who showed up and gave his all. His presence was a steady, comforting light, full of heart, humor, and unwavering dedication.
